British Society of Periodontology celebrates Diamond Jubilee

This year the British Society of Periodontology is proud to celebrate 60 years since its foundation. The Society was founded in 1949 to promote the art and science of Periodontology and today is a thriving organisation with nearly 1000 members. In addition to its main biannual clinical and scientific meetings in the Autumn and Spring each year, the society undertakes an important educational role throughout the UK with a range of regional meetings and "roadshows", together with considering other clinical issues such as preparation of guidelines etc. Diamond jubilee celebrations over the 2009-10 year include special sessions at society meetings and a celebration Jubilee Dinner on Thursday 24th September, in the impressive venue of One Whitehall Place, London SW1, to coincide with the Autumn Scientific Meeting of the Society.

The Autumn Scientific Meeting this year will be held in the prestigious surroundings of the Royal Institution of Great Britain, Albemarle Street, London on Thursday 24th - Friday 25th September. The incoming President, Prof. Francis Hughes, has assembled a programme of excellent speakers to debate the fundamental issue in Periodontology: "Plaque on Trial - does plaque really cause periodontal disease?" This meeting addresses thought provoking and innovative ideas presented by Professor Jan Bergstrom, Professor Mike Curtis, Professor Thomas Dietrich, Dr Philip Preshaw and Professor Ian Needleman and will integrate current evidence on the roles of smoking, microbial and other risk factors in the aetiology of periodontal disease and how current thinking may change our clinical practice.

The Spring Meeting of the Society will be held on 25th-27th April 2010 in Brighton to consider the topic "20 years of Periodontal Regeneration, Where are we now?" A top list of internationally renowned experts will discuss this important topic, including Professors Cortellini, Trombelli, McCulloch, Palmer and Giannobile.

These meetings are intended to appeal to a wide range of clinicians whether a specialist periodontist, general dental practitioner, postgraduate, undergraduate student or dental hygienist. CPD is awarded for the scientific sessions. Full information can be found on the Society's website www.bsperio.org.uk.
