I am pleased to announce that Gilly Hunt has been awarded Therapist of the Year Award 2010 at the Dental Awards which took place at The Lancaster Hotel.
Gilly was in the second group to train as a dental therapist at New Cross!
On behalf of BADT I would like to congratulate Gilly on receiving this accolade.

30 December 2009Sri Lankan Dental Therapists Association Celebrate their Silver Jubliee
The BADT sent warm congratulations to the SLDTA for their Silver Jubliee Celebration on 26th November.
Their Vice President, Sumithra Kumarihamy, sent a brief history on dental therapists in Sri Lanka:
'The School Dental Service was a project under the Colombo Plan extended to us with the assistance of the Government of New Zealand. In 1951 and 1952 they trained twelve of our girls in New Zealand. On their return to the island the service came into exisitance in 1953. This was an entirely new occupation for women in Sri Lanka. The comprehensive training which included outstanding management and skilled services was well accepted by the public.
The New Zealand Government released their Assistant Director of Dental Services, Dr Bruce Rice to take charge of the project. Miss Kathleen Salter and Miss Better Webber, two New Zealand tutors joined him. The first batch of fifteen trainees were accepted at the Dental Therapist Training School, situated in Maharagama in Colombo in 1955. The training was strictly according to the New Zealnd model. The theme was to keep a child dentally fit from an early age with methodical dental health care and planned dental treatments.
The Sri Lankan Dental Therapists Association was founded in 1959 and present membership stands at three hundred therapists providing services in approximately three hundred clinics all over the island.
We are proud to hear of BADT's achievements in the service and express our sincere gratidude for taking hands with the SLDTA'.

19 October 2009MHRA LAUNCHES CONSULTATION FOR THERAPISTS AND HYGIENISTS TO ADMINISTER/SUPPLY MEDICINES
The MHRA have launched a consultation in regard to therapists and hygienists being able to administer or supply medicines.
We urge everyone to respond to this please. Individual responses are very very important.

10 August 2009 More...British Society of Periodontology celebrates Diamond Jubilee
This year the British Society of Periodontology is proud to celebrate 60 years since its foundation. The Society was founded in 1949 to promote the art and science of Periodontology and today is a thriving organisation with nearly 1000 members. In addition to its main biannual clinical and scientific meetings in the Autumn and Spring each year, the society undertakes an important educational role throughout the UK with a range of regional meetings and "roadshows", together with considering other clinical issues such as preparation of guidelines etc.

1 August 2009 More...Jose Prior
It is with great sadness that we report the death of Jose Prior in June this year after a long illness. Many of you will remember Jose as she was Senior Lecturer at the New Cross School from the 1970's until its closure in 1983 and was the Assistant Director for the School of Hygiene at Cardiff from 1986. She later became the Director of the Dental Auxiliary School in Cardiff having been instrumental in setting up the Dental Therapy course in Wales. She remained at Cardiff until her retirement in 2002. A full obituary will be published in the September issue of the journal. 15 July 2009
